Every four years since 1992, the town of Brest in western Brittany, has been home to tall ship meetings. The 1996 edition, surprisingly called Brest'96, saw 3000 ships from all over the world at anchor along 7 kilometres of quays in the military and commercial harbours of the town. The festival lasted four days around the 14th of July, French Bastille Day. The ships were admired by more than a million visitors, that is more than 4 times the number of people actually living in the town and the neighbouring villages.
