Development charity Practical Action, for example, has researched the design of smoke hoods, made locally from mud or galvanised iron. These stand over the cooking fires and channel 75 per cent of the smoke through a metal chimney high above corrugated-iron roofs. Rispa Juma, an elderly woman from Kandalo in Kisumu, had a smoke hood installed in her house. "I used to cough all the time and had watery eyes," she says. "Now I can sit comfortably by the fire."
