After 'smelling' gas the emergency number was called (in the UK, free on 0800 111 999) the supply was turned off at the mains then new plastic pipe was inserted through a sawn-out section (under the lawn) of the leaking steel pipe and sealed to the natural-gas main at one end and the meter at the other and welded in the middle. Presto: one new armoured plastic pipe with minimal works inside the house. Over the course of the next couple of days the holes were refilled and re-paved/-turfed. Very smooth.
